In fabric printing, specific areas of the cloth are treated with one or more colors to create distinct, well-defined patterns.

Here, the design is displayed as a repeating pattern that continues from every edge.

It is natural to ask: is there truly a distinction between dyeing and printing?

I will say:

 

I would explain it this way: Dyeing is much like printing, but in dyeing the entire fabric is evenly soaked in a single color, whereas in printing, designs or repeating patterns are applied either across the whole surface or only on selected areas.

The journey goes back to 1968, when a groundbreaking patent for inkjet printing technology laid the foundation for what we now know as digital printing.

Computer Printer

In the 1990s, inkjet printers became a common part of daily life, mainly used for paper printing—you might even recall one on your office desk. Over time, this technology advanced rapidly, and major companies began developing specialized wide-format digital printers. Unlike traditional machines, these printers weren’t limited to paper alone. They could print on a wide range of substrates, including canvas, vinyl, and most importantly, fabric.

This marked the beginning of a new era for the textile industry. Printing was no longer confined to conventional methods like dyeing or screen printing. Digital technology made it possible to produce intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and detailed designs directly on fabric with remarkable accuracy and speed.

Unlike traditional methods, this innovative approach enables images, patterns, and detailed graphics to be printed with remarkable accuracy directly from the computer onto fabric through large-format digital machines.

Today, there are two widely used methods in the industry:

  • Sublimation Digital Printing

  • Direct Digital Printing

Both share the same underlying technology, yet differ in terms of the fabrics they are suitable for and the preparation process required. In the following section, MD FASHION will walk you through these two methods in detail, showing how each plays a vital role in modern textile printing.

Understanding the process behind digital textile printing

As we’ve seen, there are two main methods of digital printing. Let’s start with how Sublimation Digital Printing works:

Step 1 – Preparing the Design:
Process your digital print file (RIP) and make it ready for output.

Step 2 – Printing:
The design is printed as a mirrored version onto specially coated transfer paper. As the print head moves back and forth across the paper, it gradually deposits layers of ink, building the image with precision and clarity.

Sublimation Digital Printer

Step 3 – Fusing / Heat Transfer:

The printed, coated paper is carefully transferred onto polyester-based fabric using a heat transfer machine under high temperature and pressure.

Key points to note:

  • The coated paper is commonly called heat transfer sublimation paper.

  • The process of embedding the print onto fabric using extreme heat and pressure is known as the fusing method.

  • Heat transfer machines can be either oil-heated or electric.

2. How Direct Digital Printing Works

Step 1 – Pr-Treatment:
Before printing, apply a special coating chemical to the fabric, a process also known as padding. This helps the fabric absorb and hold reactive dyes more effectively.

Step 2 – Preparing the Design:
Select the correct fabric profile and RIP the digital design to make it ready for printing.

Step 3 – Printing:
Lay the per-treated fabric flat on the printer’s sticky belt. The coated fabric is then fed into the direct digital printer, which prints the design precisely onto the fabric.

Step 4 – Drying:

Once printed, the fabric passes through a built-in heater on the digital printer to dry the ink thoroughly.

Step 5 – Post-Treatment:

After printing, the fabric undergoes steaming, washing, drying, and ironing. This is the most delicate stage, as each type of fabric requires specific steaming time and intensity depending on its material and length.

Key points to know:

  • In traditional screen printing, a thick ink fixer is incorporated directly into the ink. In digital printing, this would clog the tiny inkjet nozzles, so the fixer is applied before printing.

  • The printer’s ink head is set just a few millimeters above the fabric. Proper head height protects the nozzles and ensures sharp, crisp prints.

  • Steaming helps the ink bond firmly to the fabric fibers.

  • Washing removes excess ink and fixer, while drying and ironing finalize the process, accompanied by a quality control check.

Digital fabric printing works like a computer-controlled paper printer but on a more complex scale. Variables such as:

  • Design

  • Fabric GSM

  • Fabric type

  • Color management

  • Printer brand & print-head settings

  • Number of passes

  • RIP software

  • Temperature and humidity

  • Pre- and post-treatment chemicals

  • Ink/dyes

…all must be carefully controlled to achieve the best results.

Yes, there are many variables, and slight lot-to-lot variations are normal. But even with these complexities, digital fabric printing is far superior to traditional methods in precision and flexibility.
